It has been months since I have written a post here. This will be the final post of The Boyd Report.
The Boyd Report was first conceived in 2020 as an experiment. I have blogged off and on since I was in college almost 20 years ago. About seven and a half years ago, I was fortunate to turn my writing hobby into a professional writing and research career.
The Boyd Report was an experiment into email newsletters in general and Substack in particular. It remained a free to subscribe newsletter throughout its existence and eventually I decided to keep it a free newsletter for many reasons. The first and biggest reason is that I could not decide what paid subscription perks I wanted to offer subscribers. The second reason was that I could not commit to regular schedule of publishing. The third reason is that I was nowhere near aggressive enough in promoting this newsletter.
The Boyd Report could’ve probably had a lot more subscribers if I would’ve kept a regular schedule of publication. Instead, I would frequently take months off from publishing something, preferring to post commentary on Facebook and Twitter. Among the problems was the lack of an accountability mechanism to keep me writing.
Another major reason why I could not write until now is that I was going through some personal trials. My mother had been in and out of the hospital since September and is just now starting to improve health wise. The stress from that situation contributed to a major writer’s block which is just now starting to clear.
I plan on writing more publicly in the coming year, both on my own newsletter and for outside publications. Ironically in order to ensure that I can get started on the right foot in 2022, I must end a publication. Like a scientist, I have collected the data I have needed in order to go forward. The Boyd Report must end.
But I am not leaving Substack. In fact, I will be launching a new publication on January 3, 2022. It will be a team effort that will take into account the lessons learned from The Boyd Report. It will be less a self-promotional vehicle and instead will be based around the issues and values that are important to me.
I look forward to you joining me on that journey next year. I look forward to telling you more about it in the coming couple of weeks.
In the meantime, I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
In Liberty,
Kevin Boyd
